Urban building opportunity
at the heart of Stuttgart

This construction site can only be described in superlatives. For more than a decade, around 4,000 engineers and workers have been building two railway stations and kilometres of tunnel. At the end of 2010, retired railway boss Hartmut Mehdorn and representatives from the region announced the official start of Stuttgart 21 construction at the ground-breaking ceremony. Since then, excavation pits have been dug, tunnels drilled and building shells erected. Up to 4,000 people work daily at the huge construction site. The cost of the main station and new track section to Ulm is currently estimated at EUR 6.1 billion. The 20 tunnels between Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen and Ulm total around 58 kilometres in length. Approx. 10 million cubic metres of rock and soil will be hewn out and removed for the success of the project. The Europa district, the area around the new main station under construction, is one of Germany’s most important inner city developments. The new main station is at the centre of the Europa district development. Moskauer Straße forms the central axis of the new city district. All the other streets and squares are pedestrian precincts. Mailänder Platz is at the centre of the Europa district. Fountains and leafy trees transform it into the vibrant urban heart of this city district.

The focal point of the new cultural hub in the city centre is the library. On its second anniversary it received the “Library of the Year” award. This prize is bestowed by the German Library Association and ZEIT Foundation and is Germany’s only national library award.
