The RömerkasteIl – creative ideas in a historic setting

The Römerkastell, Baden-Württemberg’s largest media hub, perches high above the rooftops of Bad Cannstatt. Built in 1908–10 as cavalier barracks on the remains of a Roman fort for König Wilhelm of Württemberg’s dragoons and used by US forces until the beginning of the 1990s, the Römerkastell currently provides space for many companies in the media and creative industry, various educational institutes and unusual residential housing.

The highly successful “SOKO Stuttgart” series for instance is produced here in the studios of Bavaria Fernsehproduktion. The regional channel Regio TV broadcasts live from the Römerkastell site, while Macromedia, Akademie und Hochschule der Medien [Macromedia University of Applied Science] and the Popbüro ensure a supply of talented creative newcomers.

diconium digital solutions – Germany’s largest e-commerce service provider develops solutions for online shops and e-business platforms in the Römerkastell. However, many smaller and specialised advertising, media production, trade fair and event, packaging and design agencies are also located at the hub as a counterpart to the film makers, photographers and sound designers.

Every evening, Thorsten Strotmann captivates guests in his Magic Lounge. Aside from trade fairs and events like the Kulinart, concerts, fashion shows, private and exclusive corporate events take place in the Phoenixhalle event location.

With the realignment of its boundaries, the hub at Römerkastell is fast developing into a community centre, thus improving local amenities for the surrounding districts. A mix of amenities including stores and restaurants bring even more life to the historic walls. A branch of the Volks- bank, a travel agent, Italian restaurant and an ice cream parlour offer their services and culinary delights, for instance. The new building, which blends in perfectly with the historic listed site, houses a REWE food store and drinks cash-and-carry, a bakery, beauty parlour and a dry cleaner.
