No other federal state offers such a diversity of universities as Baden-Württemberg. Research universities, universities of applied sciences and teachers’ seminars are excellent; some of them are of top international rank. The Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University, formerly the University of Cooperative Education (Berufsakademie), represents perhaps the most important policy innovation in Germany’s education system. Various university and college-level institutions offer modern training in numerous fields of study. The predominant share of theory or practice depends on the course of study and type of university, and students can choose from among diverse final degrees.

There are forty universities of applied science in Baden-Württemberg. For the most part, these institutions are structured according to professional specialties. One can register for generally well-known disciplines such as business administration and architecture, but some programmes offered are quite specific, like winery business administration or tourism business administration in Heilbronn. Other study options are technology and economics, architecture, civil engineering, social work and religious education or media science, the latter being a programme offered at HDM in Stuttgart. New cinematic talents mature in their chosen field at the well-known Ludwigsburg Film Academy. At the VWA Hochschule in Stuttgart, courses in economics can be completed on the basis of the cooperative education concept. Hochschule Biberach, a university of applied sciences, focuses on architecture, civil engineering, business administration and biotechnology. About 1,300 students study there. The university won top rankings in their departments of civil engineering and architecture, and as a result is one of the most highly regarded educational institutions in Ger- many. Another prominent institute is the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences. About 5,500 students study in various highly specialised departments like automotive engineering, applied natural sciences, business administration and social work. Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences was founded in 1878. About 5,900 students are enrolled for training in specialist departments such as sensor systems, cartography and geomatics.
