Art museums of international standing

Museums occupy an important role as places of culture. Capable of attracting a wide audience, they arouse curiosity and convey content in a way that opens up new perspectives to visitors from all walks of life.

Art of international calibre is shown at the State Gallery and in the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart. Both museums offer impressive collections. Although there are 1,300 museums in Baden-Württemberg, only the major ones like the Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden are well-known. The Museum Frieder Burda opened its doors to the public in October 2004. The plans for the new museum directly adjacent to the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden were designed by New York architect Richard Meier. Comprising art of international provenance, the Frieder Burda collection of Classic Modernist artworks is shown in temporary special exhibitions, enhanced by pictures from the permanent collection. No less interesting is the municipal Galerie Stihl Waiblingen, which opened in May 2008. The exhibition shows works on and made of paper. Since it was opened the high quality and variety of the gallery’s programme has attracted more than 100,000 to Waiblingen.

Modern man is well represented in the ZKM 1, the Center for Art and Media Technology in Karlsruhe. Beyond its role of museum the ZKM 1 also unites research and production, exhibitions and events, communication and documentation under the one roof. The two museums and media library are open to the public. The Media Museum holds one of the world’s largest collections of interactive media art.
