The Stuttgart–Ulm rail project includes Stuttgart 21 and the new Wendlingen– Ulm rail line.
Stuttgart 21 is more than just a railway station: it actually combines three new passenger stations and holding sidings, plus more than 50 kilometres of new track. Trains can access Stuttgart main station from both sides on a largely underground circular line. The surface tracks are no longer needed, giving rise to two new urban districts at the centre of Stuttgart with more green spaces.

The journey across (and through, in tunnels) the Swabian Alb is fast and comfortable on the new Wendlingen–Ulm line.

Many improvements in both long distance and regional train services will be created. Around 75 per cent of Baden-Württemberg’s citizens live in urban and rural areas which will benefit from shorter travel times, more frequent services and direct links. The airport and the trade fair centre are just eight minutes away from the new Stuttgart main railway station. The Stuttgart–Ulm rail project is part of the important European Paris–Budapest long-distance railway corridor, which is being developed into a highspeed line.

The project is a stimulus package for greater Stuttgart and much of Baden- Württemberg. The improved railway infrastructure encourages investment in the region, resulting in thousands of new jobs. Substantial value chain effects are anticipated across the state, with many regions benefiting from the closer links to the Stuttgart business community, and the city and state from higher tax revenues. Economic areas at national and international level grow closer together.
