Multimedia in the future
Südwestrundfunk (SWR) is the second largest ARD organisation serving the federal states of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland Palatinate with a total population of 15 million people. Furthermore, SWR reaches people across Germany with programmes that contribute to the ARD joint programme Das Erste – with a share of currently 18.2 per cent – and to the joint programmes 3sat, ARTE, phoenix, KiKA and funk.
A multimedia SWR is the aim and future project of the media corporation. The transition is well underway, focusing on providing users with access to up-to-date regional content on all end devices, no matter whether television set, radio, PC, tablet or smartphone.
An initial editorial project went live in 2017: SWR Aktuell. This all-embracing media news portal pools and networks SWR’s information expertise. SWR Aktuell provides regional news for the south- west on the Internet, as an app, and on the SWR television and radio channels – reliably, always and everywhere. News covers Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland Palatinate, Germany and the world.

Unique in its diversity in the south-west
SWR Media Services GmbH gives a voice and face to SWR brands, bringing them to life and providing access to the SWR infra- structure. Headquartered in Stuttgart and Baden-Baden, the company is a wholly owned subsidiary of SWR. In line with the Interstate Broadcasting Agreement SWR has clearly separated its journalistic and commercial remits by transferring commercial activities to SWR Media Services.
SWR Media Services markets advertising space and sponsoring in SWR radio and television. Other business fields include commercial utilisation of SWR programmes via the issue of licences and merchandising articles, channel and media infrastructure services and customer loyalty activities. Further revenue is generated from participations and real estate.
SWR Media Services also operates the Stuttgart television tower. It offers a multimedia experience with the official television tower app: the local audio guide offers interesting anecdotes, fascinating facts in the tower quiz called “Grüsse vom Turm” with the photo frame function, and more. SWR Media Services is also cooperation partner of the interactive 360-degrees-television tower app.
