Museums communicate knowledge

“Communication is top priority” is a good way to describe the role of museums in relation to their cultural mission and goals. Museums have always been treasure stores. They provide us with useful facts and world knowledge.

The “modern museum”, whether as “visible art history” or “walk-in textbook” should always enhance learning by seeing. This mission is taken seriously in the metropolitan region of Stuttgart. In Stuttgart alone, there are nine major museums and exhibition halls which mount exhibitions and show collections of high standing. Not to mention around 30 smaller museums and collections dealing with special areas. The main focus is on communication and activities directed at the general public.

The Landesmuseum Württemberg in the Old Castle and Linden Museum are of major significance in terms of cultural history and world cultures. Regional history is brought to life in the Landesmuseum Württemberg, founded in 1862 by König Wilhelm I. A special area is the “Young Castle”. Children and families learn about aspects of regional history in an entertaining approach.

Linden-Museum

Haus der Geschichte

The Linden Museum regards itself as a forum for encounters. Visitors gain varied insights into art and cultural history and the everyday culture of regions outside Europe. So they can take a short trip to the Orient by exploring the exact replica of a street in an Afghan bazaar. The Stuttgart State Museum of Natural History traces and documents the development of ora and fauna since primeval times. The collections are divided between two buildings in the Rosenstein park: Schloss Rosenstein and Museum am Löwentor. Exhibits include the Europe’s oldest dinosaur remains, the world’s oldest tortoise and unique preserved sea creatures from the Swabian Alb.

The Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg is unique in Germany, where regional history from the past 200 years is brought to life. A wide-ranging museum educational programme lets young visitors experience history at first hand.

Technology fans will enjoy the Technik museum in Sinsheim or Friedrichshafen. The Zeppelin Museum lies on the shores of Lake Constance. The “Technology and Art” concept lets visitors rediscover the long-lost oneness of the world and its wonders.
