Stronger together

Sport unites people of different ethnic origins, people with special needs, different social and cultural backgrounds and builds bridges between generations. In addition, it communicates values like tolerance, fairness, solidarity, team spirit and keeps you healthy.

In Baden-Württemberg more than 3.7 million people are members of around 11,400 sport clubs. The sport organisations and their clubs thus form one of the largest associations of individuals and make an invaluable contribution to the common good. This important work is morally, financially and permanently supported by Baden-Württemberg and the individual town councils in partnership. Top-class sport is also very important in Baden-Württemberg, and it is a rich source of models for young people and ambassadors for the region. Top-class sport is an incentive for many people to actively pursue sports. Its wide appeal encourages children and young people to become the next generation of sports people.

Baden-Württemberg is also a real El Dorado for people keen to do sports themselves. Hiking and cycling paths of all levels of difficulty criss-cross the region, providing wonderful views of forest and vineyards, valleys and rivers and breathtaking scenery. Agile rock climbers are attracted to the Swabian Alb’s Kesselwand or Gelber Fels am Trauf. Those who prefer solid ground under their feet can jog to their heart’s delight or test their stamina in the Albtrauf marathon or one of the many city runs. Cyclists are not neglected either in the Stuttgart region: from rolling hills to gruelling mountains, pedal pushers will find challenges to leave their muscles toned, while various bike parks promise to test your technical skills. Several golf courses invite players to enjoy a relaxed game on the green. And fans of water in liquid or frozen form have a hard choice to make when it comes to sports. There is an abundance of outdoor and indoor pools, spas in Stuttgart to leisure pools in the region. Many row- ing, sailing and canoeing clubs offer fun on the water. And in winter skating rinks and snowy slopes beckon on the Swabian Alb and in the Black Forest.

But no sport round-up would be complete without football. Generations of fans from Stuttgart and the region faithfully make their way to the Cannstatt Wasen and the Mercedes- Benz Arena. The home ground of VfB Stuttgart along with the neighbouring duo of the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer Hall and Porsche-Arena and also the SCHARRena offer plentiful space for major sport events.

First-class sport entertainment is also promised by the matches of the handball teams Frisch Auf Göppingen, TVB 1898 Stuttgart, the basketballers MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg, ladies volleyball team Allianz MTV Stuttgart and of course Adler Mannheim, the seven times’ ice hockey champ. Top-class events like the inter- national show jumping tournament in the Schleyer Hall, the ATP women’s tennis tournament in the Porsche Arena or Mercedes- Cup at Weißenhof thrill spectators, along with countless other sport events and Bundesliga matches in the region. National and international football matches have always played an important role in the region and in Stuttgart’s sporting history.
